Svaneti is the land of a thousand towers and the Golden Fleece … History, culture and delicious food … The beautiful peaks of the Caucasus: Shkhara, Ushba, Tetnuldi, Laila, Zhanga, Shkhalda, etc.

Svaneti is a historical region in Western Georgia, located on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, in the upper reaches of the Inguri and Tskhenistskali rivers. The Svans achieved particular power in the last centuries BC. e. and in the first centuries BC e., after the fall of the Kingdom of Colchis.

As academician N. Marr wrote: “So many masterpieces of Georgian Christian literature and art have been preserved in Svania that, if not for them, other valuable pages of the history of Georgian culture would have disappeared … One would think that Svania was a special refuge for a warehouse in it inaccessible vaults and to save those cultural property that was threatened with death during the devastating invasions of all world conquerors. However, Svan collections of art and writing of character are not such an accidental delivery. Svans are involved in this production as its creators; it is connected with the local organization of the same feudal Christianity and with the public interests of the Svan noble class.”

The tour is designed for 4 days, but we can plan for you a tour of any duration from 3 to 10 days and change the route to your requirements.

Tour description:

Route: Tbilisi – Zugdidi – Mestia – Ushguli – Tbilisi

1 day

• Departure to Samegrelo and visit the center of this area of Zugdidi with the historical Dadiani Palace.
• Latali village with an ancient church and frescoes (10-11 centuries).

 

• Visit the Ethnographic Museum in Mestia.

 

• Overnight in Mestia.

2 day

• Departure to the village of Ushguli,
• On the way, you will see the village of Khe and Kala, we can also climb to the Lagurka church (11th century frescoes), an easy walking route 2.2 km, if you wish.
• Visit Queen Tamara’s Summer Tower and Lamaria Church.
• Return to Mestia and overnight.

3 day

• Walking tour to the Chaaladi Glacier. The glacier is located on the southern slope of the Caucasus Range, at the source of the Mestia-Chala River. The height of the glacier is 1850 meters. Chalaadi is the only glacier in the forest zone. The glacier feeds on snows from the peaks of Bzheduha, Chatini and Dalacori. The route is 6-7 km, easy.

 

• Ascent to Khatsvali (on the lift) 2300 meters above sea level (panoramic views of the Caucasus peaks: Ushba, Tetnuldi, Layla, Bangurian).

 

• Visit the Ethnographic Museum in Mestia.

4 day

• Departure to Tbilisi.
• On the way, we can visit Martville Canyon or Okatse Canyon.
• 22:00 – arrival in Tbilisi.
